Summer’s almost here and it will soon be time to take to the roads for some outdoor adventure. But before you start packing, be sure that your summer ride is ready for the challenge. Whether you own a classic car, an off-roader, or a recreational vehicle, all motor vehicles need regular maintenance. If your summer ride has been mothballed during the off-season, here are some things to check before you hit the road.

Vehicles Idled by the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we think about travel. If you’ve been furloughed from work or have been otherwise affected by a stay at home order related to the COVID-19 pandemic, your vehicle may be garaged for longer than usual.  When life gets back to normal, you’ll want the confidence of a recently serviced vehicle which we can provide.

So, don’t forget these maintenance tips:

Classic Cars

If you own a classic car, chances are, it has been garaged or under wraps for the winter. Before you take that vintage Vette or Mustang out on the road, be sure to get a safety check and tune-up. Older automobiles often need some extra TLC, so be sure to check these key items:

  • Change the engine oil (contaminants can clog fuel lines)
  • Ensure that fluid levels are maintained
  • Give your car a radiator flush to clean dirty or compromised coolant/antifreeze
  • If your classic auto has been idle since last year, you may also want to flush the brake lines before replacing the fluid
  • You may wish to go the extra step of draining the gas tank and having the fuel lines cleaned

Off-Road Vehicles

If you have a vehicle that is as agile on rugged terrain as it is on highway terrain, such as off-roaders and heavy-haulers, that tend to endure more wear and tear, a breakdown can put your summer travel plans on hold! Before you hit the trail…

  • Check and replace transmission fluid. Transmission fluid can become contaminated by road grit and lose its viscosity, which makes your transmission work harder (and run hotter) than it should
  • Check your suspension system
  • Flush brake lines and replace brake fluid if needed
  • Get an oil change
  • Check tires for tread and inflation
  • Check all safety lights, indicators, etc.

RVs

Before you take to the road to rediscover America, or just head for the hills for some camping or fishing, be sure your recreational vehicle is travel ready. If your RV has been garaged or under wraps in your driveway since last camping season, it’ll probably need some basic maintenance to get ready for summer. Items to check include:

  • Tire pressure and tread quality
  • Coolant/Antifreeze levels
  • Wiper fluid levels
  • Headlights and indicators
  • Interior systems (lighting, bathroom, kitchen, etc).
