In our last blog post about transmission fluid, we discussed the background of transmission fluid and how it is used in your car. In this blog post, you can learn more about the history and recommended use of transmission fluid.

Early transmission fluids actually used whale oil as one of their components, but since whale oil tends to break down at higher temperatures, its use was phased out in the early 1970s. Modern fluids are composed of a broad range of chemical compounds, and while the main purpose is lubrication, these compounds can include corrosion-prevention agents (to stop rust), anti-wear agents, dispersants (to make sure lubricant is distributed properly) and surfactants (to prevent sticking).

Recommended transmission fluids vary by make and model. Popular fluids include ATF+4 (Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler); Mercon V (Ford and Mercury); Dexron (General Motors); ATF DW-1 (Honda and Acura); and SP-IV or SP4 (Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi). To find the type of fluid that’s recommended for your vehicle, check the owner’s manual or ask a service or retail professional.

To ensure optimal operation of your vehicle, periodically check your transmission fluid levels between fluid changes. Using the transmission dipstick provided in the engine compartment, check the smell and consistency of the fluid. Gritty or burnt-smelling fluid is a sign of fluid degradation and a warning that it’s time to get your car’s transmission fluid changed. Also check the fluid level (with the vehicle in park and the engine running). If the fluid level fails to reach the “fill” line on the dipstick, you’ll need to add more. Just be sure to use a funnel and not to overfill.

Remember, a little attention to the level and condition of your transmission fluid now can extend the life of your transmission and save you a costly replacement or rebuild.
